Dental Crowns

Crowns are prosthetic devices used to fully cover the tooth structure present above the gum line. They are tiny porcelain jackets that restore damaged teeth while also providing them protection, stability, and durability. Crowns are custom-made to fit your requirements, and porcelain easily mimics the natural color of the teeth and blends in really well with the rest of your teeth. You may require dental crowns in the following various situations.

  • Large decays and fractures that have damaged more than fifty percent of the tooth structure need to be covered with crowns. Crowns provide such teeth with protection and strength.

  • After a root canal treatment, teeth are left hollow. Such teeth are restored using crowns to protect them from fracturing and cracking.

  • Fractures and chips present inside a tooth cause pain and discomfort. A crown holds the tooth together to provide stability and protection.

  • If your tooth or teeth have experienced excessive wear and tear due to grinding, crowns can be used to restore them.

  • Crowns can also be used to fix the undesired appearance of teeth. Discolored and stained teeth are often capped with crowns to restore the natural luster.

  • Teeth with abnormal spacing and gaps are also fixed using crowns.

What are the different types of crowns?

There are several kinds of crowns available. Your dentist will choose the right crown for you, based on the following factors:

  • The location of the tooth requires a crown restoration

  • The position and condition of the gum tissues

  • The length of the crown is visible when you smile

  • The color and shape of the tooth

  • Your preference

  1. Gold-alloy crowns
Gold is used with various alloys to fabricate crowns that improve the strength of natural teeth. Gold crowns are installed in patients with a strong bite or bad habits like grinding or clenching. Gold crowns are used for restoring the back molars that require extra durability.

  2. Stainless steel crowns
Stainless steel crowns are used to cover baby teeth in children. When a child's deciduous tooth is suffering from decay, your dentist at Bliss Dentistry in Campbell restores it using stainless steel crowns. The deciduous teeth fall out to make space for the permanent teeth and these crowns fall out along with them.

In adults, a stainless steel crown is used to temporarily cover the damaged tooth while a permanent crown is being custom-fabricated.

  3. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are strong, long-lasting, and provide an aesthetic solution to damaged teeth. They are color-matched to your neighboring teeth. These crowns can be used to restore both the back and front teeth. Porcelain provides an aesthetic appeal while metal provides the required strength.

  4. All-ceramic crowns
All-ceramic crowns are free of metal but provide equivalent strength to teeth. Being aesthetically appealing, they can be used anywhere in the mouth.

  5. Ceramic crowns
Porcelain crowns are made completely out of porcelain and provide excellent aesthetic value to your smile. Porcelain is capable of reflecting natural light and provides you with a lustrous smile.

However, porcelain crowns cannot withstand the bite pressure of the back teeth and are usually used only to restore front teeth.

  6. Glass
Glass crowns are natural-looking and can be used to replace both the back and front teeth.

How are crowns placed?

Preparing a tooth for receiving a crown and its installation requires two dental visits.

  1. First visit: Consultation, treatment planning, and preparing the tooth
During the first visit, your dentist will take a few X-rays to examine the roots of the tooth receiving the dental crown. If the tooth has suffered huge decay and poses a risk of infection to the dental pulp and the surrounding tooth structure, your dentist will perform a root canal treatment to save the tooth. Impressions of your mouth will be taken to custom-fabricate the crown to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth.

A temporary crown is used to cover and protect the prepared tooth until your second visit to the dentist.

  2. Second visit: Installation of the dental crown
During your second visit, the doctor will remove the temporary crown and replace it with a custom-fabricated permanent crown.
